Dr. Heather Lettner-Rust - Discussion Leader

Lettner-Rust.jpeg

Dr. Heather Lettner-Rust, professor of English, currently serves as the director of Civitae, a 4-year interdisciplinary program at Longwood University focused on equipping students with the knowledge of how, when, and why to engage as civic leaders. She is most proud of helping students produce multiple volumes of magazines detailing the stories of local citizens affected by the Prince Edward County school closings of 1959-1964. They are available at the Moton Museum in Farmville, Virginia free and through the Moton website in digital form.

Her interest in joining Project Illuminate as a Discussion Leader was to learn more about her neighbors and friends in the community who are willing to share their experiences as African American veterans. As one veteran put it: "If I go there, you are there with me."
