Project Illuminate

Dr. Eric Hodges, a professor of political science at Longwood University and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran received the Dialogues on the Experiences of War grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities to explore how the struggle for civil rights affected the wartime and homecoming experiences of Black veterans. With the funding of this grant, the creation of Project Illuminate became possible and the work to share the untold stories of Black veterans and build fellowship amongst Black veterans in the Richmond and Farmville, Virginia areas began.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency created in 1965 which is the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
